Sujata Shah - The Root Connection - My Journey as a quilter
Price £8.00 members / £12.00 non-members
Sujata Shah is a graphic designer and textile artist. Originally from Mumbai, India, she now lives in the USA.
Her instinctive ability to work with colours and textures combined with education in graphic design has helped her develop a unique style as a designer. Influenced by utilitarian quilts and handmade crafts from around the world, she developed an abstract form of traditional quilt blocks and subsequently published the book “Cultural Fusion Quilts – A Melting Pot of Piecing Traditions”.
She draws her inspirations from imperfections and irregularities of free-spirited folk art and crafts from around the world believing that each handmade craft has a stamp of the maker.
Sujata has won awards for her quilts in local and national quilt shows and designed quilt patterns under the name of Rangoli Designs.
Her lecture covers her journey as a quilter including travels in India and an insight into how she connects memories of the past with today’s creative process
While growing up in India, rich colours, handwoven textiles, and hand-crafts were part of Sujata's daily life. She learned to appreciate the irregularities and imperfections of handmade crafts. Her instinctive ability to work with colors and textures combined with education in graphic design has helped her develop a unique style as a quilt designer.
Inspired by the utilitarian quilts and handmade crafts from around the world, she developed an abstract form of traditional quilt blocks and subsequently published the book; Cultural Fusion Quilts. The presentation includes a slide show of her travels in India as well as her journey as a quilter.
The slide show is followed by the trunk show of original quilts. She will share how she connects the dots between the memories of the past, and today's creative process.
